HKEDB S1–S3 Science: Rules for Vertical Section Diagrams

Why do we draw vertical section diagrams (切面圖)?

In Hong Kong Junior Secondary Science (Unit 1), experimental setups are drawn as 2D vertical cross-sections rather than 3D pictures so they are clear, accurate, and easy to communicate.

  1. Draw with a Sharp Pencil & Ruler: Use clear, single, continuous lines. Straight edges and glass walls must be drawn with a ruler.
  2. Strictly 2D Cross-Section (NO 3D): Do not draw elliptical rims at the top or bottom of beakers, cylinders, or funnels.
  3. NO Shading or Colouring: Never shade rubber stoppers, glass rods, or liquids. Leave all cross-sections unshaded.
  4. Do Not Block Openings:
    • Open containers (beaker, conical flask, test tube, measuring cylinder, evaporating dish) must be open at the top.
    • The tip of a dropper and the stem of a filter funnel must be open at the bottom.
    • A delivery tube passing through a rubber stopper must remain an open, continuous channel.
  5. Correct Apparatus Touching & Positioning:
    • Wire gauze is drawn as a horizontal line of X X X X X X X X X X resting directly on top of the tripod, and the beaker rests directly on the wire gauze (no floating gaps!).
    • In filtration, the bottom tip of the filter funnel stem should touch the inner wall of the conical flask/beaker, and the liquid is poured down a tilted glass rod.
  6. Labeling Rules (NO Arrowheads!):
    • Use a ruler to draw straight label lines WITHOUT arrowheads that touch the apparatus part.
    • Label lines must not cross each other. Write the apparatus name horizontally at the end of the line.
